Battle of the Year Lacks Originality

There’s not much story to Battle of the Year, and the script lacks interesting characters and compelling dialogue but the athletic b-boy dancing is visually entertaining.

Battle Of The Year centers around a same-named, real-life dance contest, held annually in France. Breakdancing may have started in the U.S., but in this fiction film, the American team has been out of the running for 15 years and the Koreans now dominate. Hip-hop business czar Dante Graham (Laz Alonso), wants to sponsor a crack group of b-boys to win the b-Battle this year. He hires an old college buddy, Jason Blake (Josh Holloway). Blake was a very successful basketball coach until a couple of years back when his wife and son died in a car crash and sent him into a tailspin. Blake - the ultimate team-builder - assisted by his fan-boy assistant, Franklyn (Josh Peck), selects a national team of stars, boards them in a former juvenile detention center and he puts them through intense daily workout routines while he whittles the group down to the best of the best.
